Bert L. Long Jr.
The artists are few who achieve both national and international recognition while keeping their roots and friends back at home. Bert L. Long Jr. is doing that this summer with exhibitions at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, and at "G" gallery in the Houston Heights. We were both privileged and happily challenged to work with Mr. Long on this ambitious colograph work in the intaglio medium.

Bert brought an initial sketch into the studio from a pad he had been keeping by his bedside for nocturnal note taking and inspirations.

(Bert even made use of the advertising design at the top of the note pad.)

It was soon a full blown project with two seperate 30" x 47" collages on masonite plates that were then varnished and made ready for the colograph intaglio process. During the application of the primary colours used, the paper and plates pass six times through the press, creating 27 different designated colour areas for the entire image.

"Life, so be it," Our project together brought full circle a friendship born of  artistic common ground and mutual respect.
